A CHANGE OF SCENE

A few lovely places to start.

North Yorkshire · England

York

Good for
A historic-city stay with Minster green spaces and a flexible riverside outing.
Plan around
Ordinary pet dogs are not allowed on York's City Walls (assistance dogs excepted); the raised walkway has steps, narrow sections and unguarded edges. If you want the wall walk, arrange for someone to stay with your dog.

Swansea · Wales

Rhossili

Good for
Rhossili beach and headland walks with farmhouse, cottage or group accommodation.
Plan around
Worm’s Head causeway is tidal and can be cut off by the sea. Check the National Trust tide information and warning signs before crossing, and leave time to return with your dog.

Perth and Kinross · Scotland

Pitlochry

Good for
A Pitlochry woodland break with Black Spout paths, optional Faskally trails and two hotel choices.
Plan around
During Enchanted Forest, 7 October-8 November 2026, Faskally car parks close daily 4pm-11pm; setup may also divert or close paths. Check current notices before setting out.

Belfast · Northern Ireland

Belfast

Good for
City hotels with Botanic Gardens and Ormeau Park outings.
Plan around
The Ormeau dog enclosure is open during park hours but for daylight use only. Belfast’s closing times change with daylight, so check the current park schedule before planning a late visit.

North Yorkshire · England

Whitby

Good for
History lovers who want a coastal weekend with short outings and proper pauses.
Plan around
Keep the beach as your flexible walk: seasonal dog controls affect selected Whitby areas, so check the council map and on-site signs before choosing an access point.

Conwy · Wales

Betws-y-Coed

Good for
Betws-y-Coed riverside outings with optional longer woodland walking.
Plan around
The National Trust Ty’n y Coed Uchaf and Cwm Eidda route starts at Ty’n y Coed lay-by on the B4406, not in the village. Betws-y-Coed station is 4.8 km (3 miles) away; the Betws-y-Coed-Penmachno bus stops near Woollen Mills car park.

City of Edinburgh · Scotland

Edinburgh

Good for
An Edinburgh city break with six places to stay, Old Town streets, Leith waterside paths and Portobello beach.
Plan around
Pet dogs cannot enter Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s grounds or buildings; its exception is highly trained assistance animals. Do not plan the garden as an indoor dog stop.

County Antrim · Northern Ireland

Portrush

Good for
East and West Strand walks with town or coastal-road hotel rooms.
Plan around
From 1 June to 15 September, dogs are prohibited in West Strand between Castle Erin steps and South Pier harbour wall, East Strand from Arcadia east to the stream, and across all of the small Arcadia beach.

Cumbria · Lake District · England

Keswick

Good for
Dogs and people who enjoy outdoor time but want the option to turn back early.
Plan around
Treat the short lakeside loop as mixed ground, not a smooth promenade throughout: it crosses a sheep-grazed field and rough woodland, with the steep-drop Friar’s Crag spur optional.

Cardiff · Wales

Cardiff

Good for
One Cardiff guide comparing central, Bay and northern bases for park and waterfront outings.
Plan around
Bute Park welcomes dogs but asks owners to keep them controlled and carry a lead; some areas require leads. At Cardiff Castle, pet dogs are limited to the outer Public Square.

Fife · Scotland

St Andrews

Good for
A St Andrews break with West Sands, Lade Braes and a choice of town rooms or a country-edge hotel.
Plan around
Pet dogs cannot enter St Andrews Castle; assistance dogs are permitted. Choose West Sands or a public street walk instead of planning an interior visit with your dog.

County Fermanagh · Northern Ireland

Enniskillen

Good for
A town base for estate walks and a flexible Fermanagh short break.
Plan around
Florence Court’s two dog-friendly estate walks take 1-3 hours. Give this separate visit its own outing block rather than trying to combine it with Castle Coole.
