County Durham brings together Durham city, a Teesdale castle town and the parkland around Bishop Auckland. Choose your base for the kind of break you want, then plan one main outing at a time.
Barnard Castle gives a Teesdale break a historic town centre, with the ruined castle as a manageable dog-permitted visit. The two stays here are countryside bases outside town: High Force Hotel at Forest-in-Teesdale and Headlam Hall near Gainford. Choose the setting deliberately, then make a waterfall visit a separate outing rather than expecting everything to be within a town-centre stroll.
Bishop Auckland offers a dog break centred on parkland and manageable outdoor walks.
