A town hotel avoids adding a drive to every small outing, but evening arrangements matter: Thackray’s bedroom welcome does not extend to public rooms.

The two stays offer very different routines: a chalet near Doune and a seasonal glamping base at Thornhill. Neither is a conventional hotel. Stirling works well when you balance historic streets with open green space. Choose a central hotel for the Old Town, or the university campus for a different setting outside the centre. King’s Park is a flexible outdoor anchor; Abbey Craig adds woodland and steeper ground if you want more. The castle skyline is part of the atmosphere, but pet dogs cannot accompany a normal indoor castle visit.
