Choose the accommodation and agreed dog room first, then decide how much of Eglinton’s trail network to explore. The shorter park options and a simple waterfront return make this a flexible break without a long coastal stage.
Largs is a mainland seaside base where the promenade can be the main event rather than the start of a demanding coastal hike. Stay at the Woodhouse Hotel in town or choose Willow Cottage in the quieter Brisbane Glen setting outside it. Kelburn provides a separate estate outing near Fairlie, with dogs on leads. Decide how much travelling and self-catering you want before choosing the room or cottage; neither requires a full Ayrshire Coastal Path stage.
Millport makes a small-island escape with a waterfront stroll, time in town and an optional longer coastal outing. Both stays are self-catering: Beside the Bay is a compact ground-floor apartment, while The Reef is a two-person cabin. The ferry lands at Cumbrae Slip rather than in Millport, so the onward transfer belongs in your arrival plan. A full island circuit is optional; a quiet stretch of shore can fill the day perfectly well.
