Bury St Edmunds lends itself to a gentle town break with two contrasting green spaces. Abbey Gardens places you among the historic centre’s landmarks; Nowton Park offers a separate countryside-style outing. The Angel sits on Angel Hill, while the Priory is on Mildenhall Road outside the historic core, so choose how close you want to be to the first day’s walk.

Lavenham offers a slower village break where the timber-framed streets, a woodland walk and a dog-friendly tea stop can fill the days without a crowded itinerary. Southwold is an appealing coast break, but the main beach’s seasonal restrictions make timing important. Both stays in this selection are across the River Blyth in Walberswick, not in Southwold itself. Treat them as village bases for separate seaside outings and check your chosen crossing or driving route before relying on a quick walk into town.

Choose between a coast-led visit, a historic town with two distinct green spaces, and a slower village break. The Southwold guide’s listed stays are in Walberswick across the river, so plan that crossing or a drive as part of the outing.
Choose the seaside and harbour for a coastal break, while treating the north beach as a winter option and checking the defined dog-access area. The selected inns are in Walberswick, not Southwold.
Choose Abbey Gardens for an easy central walk, then make a separate trip to the more spacious paths at Nowton Park. The guide contrasts a central Angel Hill base with a hotel outside the historic core.
