The distinction between the two parts of Castle Park matters: pet dogs cannot enter Upper Castle Park, where the landmark castle pictured here stands. Choose Holiday Inn at Eight Ash Green or Wivenhoe House beside parkland, both outside the central streets, and plan the journeys as well as the dog room.

Saffron Walden is a good fit for an unhurried market-town visit and an outdoor Audley End outing. The two stays here are village bases rather than rooms in the town centre: Crown House at Great Chesterford and the Cricketers at Clavering. Choose the journey and meal arrangement that suit you, then keep the plan focused on places your dog can actually join.
