Matlock and nearby Matlock Bath offer a Derbyshire break built around the river, gardens and a choice of canal walking. The two stays here are both in Matlock Bath, so use that as your accommodation base rather than expecting a room in Matlock town centre. New Bath publishes a fuller dog policy, while Hodgkinsons offers a smaller-hotel alternative with a one-dog limit.

Dogs must be on leads in Derwent Gardens. Follow current signs and check path conditions before extending beyond the gardens; no indoor attraction admission is included.
Make a separate journey to Cromford Mill and choose an out-and-back towards High Peak Junction. The longer continuation to Whatstandwell is optional, not the minimum for a worthwhile outing.
Keep your dog controlled beside the water, share the path considerately and follow local signs. Indoor mill areas, transport and attractions need separate dog checks.
Confirm the room, then take a short outing through Derwent Gardens with the dog on lead. Extend only if the paths and your dog’s energy suit. New Bath offers bar/lounge meals; Hodgkinsons excludes pets from its restaurant and bar, so settle an alternative before the evening.
Day two · choose a canal section
Travel to Cromford for a manageable canal out-and-back. Set a turnaround point that leaves time for the return and the journey home; there is no obligation to continue to Whatstandwell. If the weather or path conditions are poor, keep the day around Matlock Bath instead.
